How does your foreign parcel travel in India

Where is parcel originating and received decides route of your parcel in India.First foreign parcels are received at major foreign Post-office in India .Then they are transported to nearest foreign Post-office or Sub-Foreign Post Office.

As the customs clearance facilities available at these Post offices only.
Generally ,parcels send from USA, first comes to Delhi, then ,they are sorted out and despatched to your nearest foreign Post office as per address given on the parcel.

The parcels originating from Gulf countries comes toMumbai.Similarly,at
Chennai, the foreign parcel are directly coming from Singapore,Sri Lanka,Malaysia,HongKong. Lastly, The parcels despatched from China,Thailand,Japan,Korea and Philippines comes to Kolkatta.

This is just to give an idea, how the parcels are travelled within India and they are examined by customs authority at your nearest Foreign or sub-Foreign Post Office. You should enquire any matter related to Customs clearance at these nearest Post offices. However, exact movement of parcel can be ascertained from the Postal Authority only

  1. Hey there

I bought online a set of Musical Instrument from the US. The total value is around 400 USD. Where can I go and pay the customs? I am put up in Bangalore. The last time I bought something, I was charged in excess of the actual value.

  2. Dear Sir,
You may visit FPO ,Bangalore and inquire at POSTAL APPRAISING .Normally, customs will ask you to produce value evidence before charging duty. If you feel ,you have been charged more, you can give representation to AC/DC(Customs) for re-assessment.

  4. Dear Trips,
If you are sending clothes as gift then no duty upto value Rs 10,000/-. Clothes other than gift but for personal use will be charged 17.34% through Post.
Duty on clothes varies as per consitute material, say ,it is different for cotton, polyster,Silk,Knitted, woven ,etc.Further,on some goods it is charged per piece as high as Rs 500/- as Basic customs duty ,then other duty are also levied. For sake of reference, you may take duty on clothes as 24.421% of the value.

  18. Dear Mr Sam,
If your phone is costing more than Rs 2000(C.I.F.) than being consumer electronics goods,
it is restricted under Postal import and attracts fine, penalty and Duty.
This could also be reason for delay.

If phone is detained then Customs will issue notice ,otherwise ,you will receive your phone through local Post office.
    Regards

  30. Dear sir,

I ordered clothes worth 13,000 rupees from the UK for personal use. I was charged 3400 rupees as duty. Is that correct amount?
Also my package had two pieces of damaged clothes. It looked like damage was done by rats while the parcel was held at the customs for several days. I need to know who is held responsible for this damage? Does the customs have any liability to compensate us for it? Please advise.
    Thanks,
    Divya

  31. Dear Divya,
In my opinion, duty charged is ok.Duty remission for damaged goods, you have to approach to Postal authority.
