Your posts have been very informative but I am still confused over some points. As one of my friends in US has bought a used PSP. Now as it is a second hand PSP it wont have an original invoice. Also as the packaging is removed and there are blemishes on the product and the screen which decreases the value of the product. So, in that case how would the price evaluation will be done??
Also, the Indian value of the product is less than 10,000 and a that particular thing is supposed to be my birthday gift(which I am procuring for myself :-) ) will I still be paying some duty??

Dear Smith,
Thank you for appreciation. No second hand consumer goods are allowed to import as per Import Policy issued by the Ministry of Commerce. The free gift of Rs 10,000/- can be imported without duty only when goods are allowed to be imported.
In that case you to pay duty, fine and penalty on your gift item. But there is a trend of moving towards more liberalised customs clearance. You may got your birthday gift with a very nominal duty.It is all discretionary power of the officer of the day to value your gift item.it is adviasble to declare the value of old goods which you may think will be OK.It may help you in getting cleared parcel without much delay.
You may serch net for compare value of used goods or your rough estimate.
I hope you will receive your birthday gift without any hassel.
wish you happy birthday
