There is less custom duty on LCD monitor of computer then the LCD TV.The goverment has issued guideline to diffrentiate between two types LCD display.Pl check techically before importing. In customs parlance the computer is called as ADP. For easy reference the circular is reproduced:

Subject: Classification of Digital LCD / Flat Panel Monitor - Admissibility of Notification benefits - reg.
***
It has been represented by the trade and industry association that certain difficulties have been faced in classification of monitors for use with Automatic Data Processing (ADP) machine and consequent import duty exemption benefits. Doubts have been expressed by field formations as to whether ‘LCD or Flat Panel Monitors, if used along with ADP Machines would be classifiable as ‘ADP Monitor’ and whether exemption from Customs duty vide Sl.No.17 of Notification No. 24/2005-Cus dated 1.3.2005 would be admissible.
2. The issue was examined in the Board. Monitors used along with ADP machines were classified till 31.12.2006, under heading 8471 of the First Schedule to the Customs Tariff Act, 1975. Due to HS 2007 changes brought into effect from 1.1.2007, such monitors are presently classifiable under sub heading 8528 40. All types of monitors and projectors which are solely or principally used with an ADP machine is covered under the sub headings 8528 41(Cathode Ray Tube Monitors), 8528 51(Other types) and 8528 61(Projectors) and are extended with exemption of customs duty vide Sl.No.17 of notification No. 24/2005-Customs dated 1.3.2005. Further, television or video monitors were classifiable earlier under heading 8528. Presently these monitors used as Television or Video reception apparatus are classified under sub heading 8528 71 or 8528 72 as the case may be, and are not eligible for the aforesaid exemption.
3. This issue was also deliberated at the Conference of Chief Commissioners’ on Tariff and Allied Matters, wherein it was decided that the Board may issue guidelines on the basis of assessment practice that is being followed by Customs Commissionerate, Aircargo, Mumbai to distinguish ‘computer monitors’ from that of monitors for use with TV / Video and for classifying the goods under 8528 41 or 8528 51 (earlier classifiable under CTH 8471). However, to ensure uniformity, it was decided that Board could issue a circular in this regard.
4. Accordingly the technical features distinguishing the computer monitors from the other types of Television/video monitors are enclosed. These could be used by the officers of the field formation as guidance for assessment, examination of the said goods for determining its proper classification and extension of the notification benefit.
Yours faithfully,

hi im bringing in a new 24" LCD Monitor HP W2408H from UAE(i currently reside here) which is used only on computer. Is there going to be customs duty on this or is it better i try to get it in india itself
Dear Saudk,
If it is LCD monitor and not LCD TV than there will be no Customs duty .But other duty like central excise duty 14%,education cess 3% and Additional duty of 4% will be collected.
The central excise duty is also calculated based on MRP price in India by giving 23% abatment on declared MRP price.
Which ever duty is more ,central excise duty based on 14% or the MRP based duty, will be taken as excise duty.
The rate of duty on LCD monitor for computer is same whether it is imported or manufactured in India. The deciding factor is the price in India, service after sales and availability of particular brand in INDIA.
Based on above fact, you may decide whether you have to buy in India or abroad.
Warm regards

Dear Indrajit,
Thanks for appreciations. Duty on Baggage goods,if value is more than Rs 25,000/- then ,duty is 35%, on the differential amount. Hence, Baggage import is best option.

Hi Ravindra,
First of all I wish to thank you for giving clear information regarding import rules and duties.
My question is regarding import of an LCD monitor, Dell Ultrasharp 2209WA, which I have bought in Australia for AUD 319 (approx. Rs. 11600). I will bring it back with my as checked baggage. I've heard that personal electronic equipment up to Rs. 25000 is exempt from duty. As such, will I have to pay anything when I bring the monitor with me?
Dear Mukul,
Thanks for your feed back.No duty upto Rs 25,000/-on personal belongings including electronic goods.

Dear Ravindra,
I wish to buy a telescope weighing 20kg from Australia, and would like to bring it back with me when I come back to India. The cost of the telescope will be 4000 AUD. How much payment will have to be made for import?
Will it be cheaper to have it couriered to myself?
Thank you.
Dear Manohar,
The duty difference between courier mode and as a personal baggage is around 3%.
As per my view ,it is better bring along with you rather than couriered.

What would be duty, taxes and other charged that I would have to pay for the LCD TV specifically.
What is the ebst way to bring this TV to India with minimum or no payment of duty etc. Is TR is the best way ?

hi ravindra kumar..i am on a social visit to singapore . i want to purchase a lcd monitor from singapore.can u give me details of how much duty will be collected from me..
thanks ritesh
Hi Ravindra,
I really appreciate the help you are doing with these blogs.
I live in USA. I would like to bring a 46 inch TV to India that costed me $1200 (approximately Rs 57,000/-). I recently saw somewhere that the customs tax has been reduced to 5% from 10% in this year's budget for LCD monitors and TVs. Is this correct? If not what will be my custom's duty? Is it a straight forward way of clearing customs? I couldn't follow the calulation method for central excise duty that you have mentioned above. And the last question is that the price of the TV in india is Rs. 50000 more than what I have purchased it for, how will this affect my total customs?
Thanks again,
Dear Mr.Ravinder,
I intend to carry a 32" LCD TV from Muscat to Bangalore for which I have bill worth Rial Oman 100/USD 300, I dont have any other electronic item with me. Please confirm the applicable customs duty.

Thank you.

Dear drdeer,
If you are coming under TR then One desktop computer ( your all items make one computer ,if assembled together) is allowed without customs duty. Further ,there is duty free allowance of Rs 25,000/- . If your used camera is falling in this limit, then, no duty.
If value of camera is excess than this ,there is 35 % of duty on value excess than the permissible limit.
However, there is 15 % duty on Video camera if you satsify certain conditions to be eligible under TR.
You may my visit website www.globaltaxguru.in which is under construction. You may test import of LCD TV in this site. The Baggage portion is yet to be tested.Till ,i refine and test my site, i will be answering through blog.

Dear Sir,
While googling I came across your blog. Its a wonderful blog and I am sure must be helping a lot of people.
I am staying in Copenhagen, Denmark and I want to take a 32" LD TV for my sister in Delhi. The price of the LCD TV is approximately INR 20000 (DKK 2499). Since, there is a free limit of 25000, therefore do I need to pay any customs duty at Delhi airport for the TV. Also, I would be carrying a laptop (which I have been carrying during my past visits and never paid any duty). Since, this time I would be also carrying the TV therefore I am little sceptical whether I can carry both of them together without paying any duty.
Also, can you please let me know whether the price of the TV will be accessed by the customs officer or the price will be considered as writen on the invoice?
I would be very greatfull if I get a reply from you.
Dear Sharmila,
As per your mail, LCD TV and laptop ,both can be cleared without duty. If your price is fair then Customs will accept your LCD TV price.
You may visit my site www.globaltaxguru.in for more detail.

Global Tax Guru
Dear Sir,
Thank you very much for this wonderful blog and it is indeed very helpful.
I'm planning to get a 40" led tv from USA. it costs $800. i. e approx 36000 INR
so would the taxable amount be 26.85% of 36000-25000 = 11000 or
will the customs officer estimate the cost of led tv as per the receipt that I have or do they have a pre estimation list for TVs of certain size.
If I assume I will be paying 27% of 11000 INR as tax amount= 3000(approx). Is this true or will there be any other additional duties etc.
Please guide.
Note : in globaltaxguru.in Under the list of Country of Export there is no India. It is Indiana. please make sure it is corrected.
HI Ravindra garu,
This is really nice blog. ..came across in google search. Appreciable.
I bought a Sony 40 inc LED LCD for Rs35,000/- in indian rupees. But, the same model costs 1,20,000/- in India. I tried entering all the information in your globalguru site..but, I could not get the custom duty price in rupees.
It would be really helpful if you can answer here..
Are they going to look at Indian market value or the price on my invoice (wanted to ship by fedex)?? Please answer this.
I wish, I could carry as baggage..but I dont know how the airport crew is going to handle it..!
Do they include shipping price also as part of customs duty?
I am sure, more people should be looking for this answer. Thanks a lot.
Dear Krishna,
It is my personal advice ,if same item is available in India ,then , you can sold your old TV and buy new one here.
Old TV ,you cannot import through baggage ,without paying fine and penalty ,in addition to duty @ 26.85%. There is freight charge and handling issues. In Courier, the shipping cost is also added in value for duty charging.
Other option ,you bring as Baggage, you may visit my site www.globaltaxguru.in for duty calculation .In Baggage module , you have to enter value in Rs and in courier , you have to enter in foreign currency.

Hello sir,
SHIPPING THROUGH COURIER...
Some of my friends suggested your site for my question.
I am planning to send my 2 months old TV to India by UPS/Fedex. My Samsung TV costed me 45,000/-. How much do I need to pay at customs?
As someone asked above, do they charge based on price in india for that TV or do they see my invoice and charge 26.5%(as u said) of total cost?
Do they deduct 25,000/- of total cost before they calculate customs fee??
Please advice. Thanks.
Dear Raghu,
Second hand personal goods importing through Courier will attract fine and penalty, additionally you have to pay customs duty. Goods will be valued by Customs as per conditions of the same.Further delay. Best option is baggage,as far customs is concerned.

Dear ravinder ji I really appreciate ur Jan sewa and Thanks u for that.
my ques is can I bring 3 lcd tv sony of 9000 Inr each from bangkok. the total is 27000 . I also know the duty is calculated on excess allowance. But my quantity is 3 pc. Is it possible to pay duty on Rs 2000 only ??
Dear Daman,
Three LCD Tv by one person, may not be treated as bonafide baggage but may be viewed as commercial quantity. Therefore, you may be denied duty free allowance for all but allowed for one. This is very subjective ,therefore it depends on how do you convince that they are bonafide baggage.
